Manufacturing an SDI Culture:
Reinforcement Strategies

In 2008, Süd-Chemie (SCI) began a strong and far-reaching training partnership with Personal Strengths. In this presentation, SCI’s president, Chuck Maisch, will discuss why he chose the SDI to improve performance and how he is protecting his SDI training investment through a comprehensive, innovative reinforcement initiative. His collaboration with Keith Catchpole has generated a powerful new methodology for reinforcing the SDI within a corporate culture.

This real world application session will detail the creative ways SCI is cementing the SDI into their culture. Keith will introduce models used in the SCI reinforcement curriculum. Chuck will also expand on the company-wide reinforcement strategies and the SDI/SCI leadership coaching component.

Transforming Managers Into High Impact Leaders Using SDI

This is an interactive presentation detailing Olin and Laura’s decade of experience integrating SDI into leadership skills development training for business managers and the practical lessons they have learned as a result. Their 10-month leadership program transforms mindset change in the classroom into behavior change as leaders.  SDI applications are utilized in a wide range of training areas including dealing with conflict and negative politics; leading change; taking and controlling personal risk; delegating, coaching and mentoring more effectively; dealing with a wide array of difficult people; maintaining work/life balance; and defining a personal leadership style. They have also developed methods to teach emotional intelligence as a practical skill set using SDI. In this session, Olin and Laura will share personal growth metrics and other results that have changed the lives of participants and resulted in better staff morale, better client relationships, and more effective selling.

Work Performance Improvement Using the Expectations Portrait of Personal Strengths – a Case Study

The Portrait of Personal Strengths and Expectations Portrait of Personal Strengths are powerful tools to align expectations between leadership and staff for improved work performance. This session will present a case study on the use of these Portraits with the Customer and Licensing Services (CLS) division of the Media Development Authority of Singapore, whose mission is to ‘regulate to promote’ the media industry by supporting the agency’s mission of developing Singapore into a vibrant global city and foster a creative economy and a connected society. Attendees will experience intervention exercises that were conducted with the entire CLS team and benefit from the sharing of work improvement outcomes by Janice and Prabu.

Facilitating Effective Organizational Change through Relationship Awareness

Research shows that up to 75% of organizational change efforts did not yield the intended results. Instead, unintended consequences emerged in the form of demoralized employees and disengaged “survivors.” Too often, the focus is on strategic, tactical issues while critical “people” issues and needs are ignored.

This session reveals how the SDI is crucial in helping organizational leaders affect change that achieves desired and sustainable results. Change is never smooth or problem free – it always involves personal “loss” and a potential decline in productivity. By providing insight into the motivation behind behavior, the SDI empowers organizational leaders to gain commitment from key stakeholders and to focus on peoples’ specific needs and issues — particularly pertaining to morale and loss of personal control during change.  Participants will have an opportunity to analyze and suggest strategies for a real Case based on an organization experiencing a corporate merger at a global level.  The session will also provide MVS exercises highlighting unique perceptions of change and specific triggers for conflict.

What Type of Blue Are You:
Bringing SDI Into a MBTI® Culture

The MBTI® continues to be the most widely used assessment for understating individual differences and ways to interact with others. But this can be an opportunity for those of us promoting the use of SDI.® As opposed to an objection, an organization’s prior use of the MBTI can become an entry point for using the SDI to leverage and protect their investment in training. You just have to know how to make the right connections between the theories. This experiential session will compare the SDI to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® for the purpose of demonstrating how knowledge of both assessments will benefit you and your clients. Rather than competing, the SDI builds on MBTI language by making its own considerable and unique contributions to an appreciation of personality differences. By using both tools, organizations and teams — and their consultants — can be much more effective.

Done Right: The Power of MVS-Tailored Delegation

Some of us have a hard time moving past the cliché, "if you want it done right, do it yourself." But in today's fast paced work environments, delegation skills are an increasingly vital element. However, the goal is not to unload unwanted or less interesting tasks, but rather to unleash employees' potential through additional responsibilities that provide for knowledge, skills, experience, and interest. Why is it so difficult to delegate successfully? People are uniquely different in what motivates them and that’s why finding that common ground where the employee can find value in the delegated task is KEY. Employees will feel more connected to their work if their efforts make the kind of impact that matters to them. This means that we need to begin to ask questions such as, "Would this assignment be enriching to someone whose motives are primarily Altruistic‐Nurturing?" or "Would an Assertive‐Directing person find this task challenging enough?"

Energy Management and the SDI:
Using MVS as a Tool for Building and Sustaining Personal Energy and Workflow Efficiency

This engaging session is packed with progressive ideas to improve productivity by using the SDI to help manage personal energy levels. The presentation demystifies time management as the holy grail of business efficiency and shares a new benchmark paradigm that aligns well with the SDI. Dawn will first explain the concept of energy management, illustrating her points with a colorful visual metaphor — sea kayaking. She’ll examine the situation we all face in a contracting economy: increasing work demands without an accompanying increase in individual capacity. She’ll discuss how energy management unlocks efficiency, productivity, and creativity, and the important role that the SDI can play. She’ll also explore how the MVS and conflict sequence can steer individuals toward the most effective and targeted energy management practices. Meaningful Coaching

Involved in coaching? This session is an eye-opening look at how your own way of seeing things may get in their way of being an effective coach. Using experiential methods, Tina will introduce ways to bring attention to our coachee's values through Relationship Awareness, which in turn brings about a deeper commitment to actions and strengthens the coaching relationship. ICF core coaching competencies will be reviewed alongside Relationship Awareness Theory tools like the SDI Coaching Planner. Participants will be provided several job aids and time for skill practice. Tina received high marks when she presented this topic to over 200 people at ASTD International Conference 2009 in Washington DC.
